Kitchen and storerooms

The rooms to the north of the refectory most probably served as a place where food was stored and prepared. Located next to the dining area, they yielded many flat ceramic tiles, known locally as dokat. These were used for baking thin sorghum bread, nowadays called kisra. The tradition of making it dates to the Meroitic times, and they are still a staple of the Sudanese people.
